Historically, radiologic technologists who demonstrated employee excellence have been rewarded with opportunity to cross-train in one or more advanced imaging modalities. This scenario generally provided a win-win situation for the employer as well as the employee. Will this practice continue to be a viable option? The reality of health care delivery is that increased emphasis is being placed on accreditation and licensure of both the imaging facility as well as the imaging staff. In the not too distant future radiology managers may be dealing with federally mandated reimbursement stipulations related to credentials of those performing imaging and radiation therapy procedures. The evolution of the Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility, and Excellence in medical imaging and radiation therapy legislative (CARE) bill will be presented. An overview of the Alliance for Quality Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy group members will be introduced. The Alliance’s uphill climb toward educating lawmakers of important information regarding the need for all persons in the field of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy to attain and maintain a minimum educational and training standard will be described. Initiatives and challenges related to staffing while encouraging advanced education and professional certification will also be discussed.
